Many of our projects are located in London’s West End, an area rich in both historical and geographical significance. Covent Garden is one such location, with over ten Knight Harwood previously completed projects!
Today, it is a much-loved destination known for its high-end fashion, beauty, arts, and dining scene. However, its origins date back to the Benedictines of Westminster, who once maintained a kitchen garden there. It later became a thriving flower, fruit, and vegetable market, serving the city for over 300 years.
Covent Garden has long been associated with entertainment, but it was in the 18th century that it truly became a cultural hub with the construction of the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane and the Royal Opera House on Bow Street, built to entertain London’s gentry.
Thanks to our friends at Elliott Wood we can share these historic photos of Grainhouse in the early 20th Century, and how the five heritage buildings look today as one sensitively transformed commercial space in collaboration with Hines.
